(november reads)
Athens Diary
I found this really cute bookshop in my district (Meteoritis) where I’ve bought all my books so far. The owner is a really sweet and passionate guy who’s always up for a chat and the selection is thoughtfully curated.
Swimming in the Dark - Tomasz Jedrowski
A tender, emotionally gripping story of love, history, loss, and the slow, painful beauty of growing into self-defined identity.
I had so many moments throughout the book where I found myself pausing and re-reading a sentence, struck by how the most ordinary seemingly lines were turned into something that felt like poetry.
THE SLEEPING HERMAPHRODITE: Waking Up from a Lethargic Confinement
Paul B. Preciado
“What can a reclining marble sculpture, conceived through a myth in Greek antiquity, tell us today about the fluidity of our gender construction? What has been the role of aesthetic and historical canons in the construction of the female and male genders? Is ‘The Sleeping Hermaphrodite’ really asleep? Or has she/he been induced to a long lethargic state, punished and confined by the history of gender normalization?”
A very refreshing book. I loved its design, its experimental format, and the way its fragmented into short stories that open up different perspectives on queer identity and gender construction. A playful reading experience that made history feel accessible, lively, and surprisingly engaging.
DESIGN BOOKS:
SLANTED ATHENS
Insights into the culture and contemporary design scene of Athens, offering a look at the city’s creative pulse—from local studios and emerging designers to the broader aesthetic movements that shape Athens.
A MONOMENTUM
I also came across this cute zine. I love the transparent layers and handwritten elements.
How cute is this Manifesto?
Maybe some of the books speak to you?
Sending love,
Lino
